Shrinkage allowance dimension

Shrinkage compensation measure is additional space in components to compensate for thermal welding distortion. It considers empirical data and numerical simulations.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

When welding, the metal shrinks due to cooling, which causes distortion of the parts. This thermal distortion can lead to stresses and cracks if not compensated.

Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding

Insufficient shrinkage compensation can lead to stress formation and cracks in the parts. This increases the risk of hot cracks and reduces the service life of the parts.

Workshop practice & instructions

For a successful weld, correct shrinkage compensation is essential. This can be determined through empirical data and numerical simulations. When planning parts, extra space (e.g., 2-3 mm) for distortion should be taken into account.
