Shrinkage cavity

Shrinkage cavities are voids in the weld metal caused by volume loss during cooling. They occur when the metal is not sufficiently fed with filler.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Shrinkage cavities form because the metal loses volume when cooling. This volume loss can be caused by insufficient feeding or too rapid cooling.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Shrinkage cavities can lead to cracks and failures in the weld metal. They impair the strength and mechanical properties of the joint. In severe cases, this can cause total component failure.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To avoid shrinkage cavities, it is important that the metal is adequately fed during cooling. This can be achieved by carefully selecting welding parameters and using suitable filler materials. Controlled cooling is essential to minimize volume loss.
