Crater Pipe

Crater shrinkage cavity occurs when the arc is broken due to volume contraction during solidification. It contains microcracks and must be ground out mechanically.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

During welding, sudden cooling of the arc occurs, causing rapid volume contraction. This process can create holes in the crater.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Shrinkage cavities can contain microcracks that may lead to further cracking or deformation. They also impair the mechanical properties of the weld.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Mechanically ground-out craters improve weld quality. This should be done at a depth of at least 1 mm to ensure all microcracks are removed.
