Argon shielding gas

An inert noble gas serving as the primary shielding medium in arc welding to protect the molten metal from atmospheric reactions.

Argon is a shielding gas that shields the melt from oxygen and nitrogen in the air. Without this protection, you get porosity and poor weld quality, the material becomes brittle. Make sure the gas cylinder has enough pressure and the hose is tight before you ignite. Set the gas flow so that the melt stays calm and shiny, without blowing too hard. The distance between nozzle and workpiece should be such that the shielding gas flow completely covers the melt.
