Shielding argon-helium mixture
Argon-helium shielding gas mixtures increase heat input and penetration when welding highly conductive metals like aluminum and copper. They reduce porosity and improve the mechanical properties of the weld.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Argon and helium are inert and protect the weld zone from oxidation and contamination. Argon has a higher density than air, which improves heat input. Helium provides better gas flow and increases penetration.
Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding
Using this mixture on highly conductive materials prevents porosity and improves the mechanical properties of the weld. Incorrect mixture or insufficient gas flow can lead to contamination and poor weld quality.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use an argon-helium mixture with a typical composition of 75% argon and 25% helium. Make sure the gas flow is stable and the weld zone is well shielded. Adjust the heat input so that the material stays glowing hot without overheating.
