Shielding gas flow rate

The volume of shielding gas delivered per minute, which must be set for a stable arc and to reduce porosity.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The shielding gas flow rate determines how much shielding gas is supplied per minute to the welding process. This gas flow protects the workpiece from oxidation and promotes the combustion of metal particles in the arc.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A flow rate that is too low can cause the workpiece to oxidize or increase porosity. A flow rate that is too high can make the arc unstable and lead to an irregular welding path. This can cause cracks or inaccurate welds.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

The optimal shielding gas flow rate depends on the metal and welding method you use. For steel with a thickness of 6 mm in TIG welding, the flow rate is typically 10-15 liters per minute. Make sure the gas line is clean and free of blockages or restrictions.
