Shielding and Backing Gas Analysis
Shielding gas backing gas analysis monitors the oxygen concentration in the weld zone to prevent oxidation and ensure weld quality.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The analysis measures the residual oxygen content in the shielding gas (such as argon or helium) during welding. Too high an oxygen content can cause oxidation reactions that damage the metal and impair the strength of the weld.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Too high an oxygen content in the shielding gas can cause porosity, loss of strength and toughness, as well as corrosion. This can reduce the service life of components and pose safety risks.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
The oxygen concentration must always be below 1 %. If the oxygen content rises (above 2 %), the shielding gas must be replaced immediately and welding paused or stopped until the concentration returns to normal.
