Helium-Argon Shielding Gas Mixture
Helium-argon blend is a high-heat shielding gas that increases penetration depth and speed on thick workpieces. It prevents porosity and improves the mechanical strength of the weld.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Helium-argon mixture consists of helium (approx. 75%) and argon (approx. 25%). Helium has low density and flows easily, helping the gas to penetrate quickly into the weld and displace air. Argon acts as a carrier gas and improves cooling characteristics.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
The mixture increases penetration depth, leading to a more rapid burn-through. This prevents porosity and improves the mechanical strength of the weld. However, incorrect concentrations or insufficient shielding gas tightness can lead to gas bubbles or incomplete burning, causing cracks or distortion.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use helium-argon mixture for thick-walled steels and high-performance processes like TIG welding. A concentration of 75% helium and 25% argon is common. Ensure the gas penetrates well into the workpiece and displaces air. Carefully monitor welding processes for porosity and cracks.
