Shielding gas turbulence tendency
The tendency of the gas stream to draw in air at high velocities, causing porosity.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
If the gas flow rate is too high, the gas jet draws in air. This can disturb the shielding gas atmosphere and introduce oxygen into the welding process, leading to distortion and porosity.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Air entrainment leads to incomplete deoxidation. This can cause porosity, cracking, and reduced mechanical properties of the weld. It can also lead to hot cracking and distortion.
Shop Practice & Action Items
Make sure the gas flow rate is not too high. An optimal rate is around 30-50 m/s. Check and adjust the gas flow and the distance between the nozzle and the workpiece regularly.
