Shielding Gas Viscosity at High Temperatures

The kinematic viscosity of shielding gases increases with rising temperature, directly influencing the flow behavior and laminar stability of the gas stream as it exits the welding torch nozzle. A stable flow is necessary to prevent contamination of the melt by ambient air.

Make sure your shielding gas doesn't get too warm. If the gas cylinder sits in the sun or the hose runs along hot parts, the gas becomes thinner and the flow from the nozzle gets unsteady. Then the nozzle may suck in air, and you'll get pores in the weld. Keep the gas supply cool and shaded, so the flow stays laminar and the weld pool clean.
