Protective Gas Atmosphere

Shielding gas atmosphere is a gas mixture that prevents oxidation and other surface reactions during annealing. It protects the metallic purity of components.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The shielding gas atmosphere forms a barrier between the metal and the ambient air by excluding oxygen and other reactive species. This prevents oxidation and other surface reactions.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Without a shielding gas atmosphere, oxides form on the workpiece surface, impairing thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. This can lead to poor weld joints and cracks.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use a sufficiently strong shielding gas atmosphere to prevent oxidation. The gas volume should be set so that it covers the entire workpiece surface and creates a constant oxygen-free environment.
