Shielded gas welding safety
Shielding gas welding safety involves measures to prevent explosion hazards and uncontrolled gas release through proper handling of gas cylinders, regulators, and gas lines.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Compressed gases like helium or argon are stored in cylinders under high pressure. When opened, they can escape quickly into the open, leading to uncontrolled gas releases. These can cause explosion hazards if they come into contact with fire or hot surfaces.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Improper handling of compressed gases can lead to uncontrolled gas releases and thus explosion hazards. This can result in serious injuries or damage to machinery and buildings.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
• Compressed gas cylinders: Always store them in the proper location, avoid direct sunlight and hot surfaces. Check the pressure gauge regularly.
• Pressure regulators: Always use them correctly and ensure the gas pressure is continuously monitored. Do not remove the regulator before the cylinder contents are fully used up.
• Gas hoses: Make sure all connections are tight and leak-free. Use only qualified tools for opening and closing gas hoses.
