Shielding Gas System

A shielding gas system delivers controlled gases or mixtures to protect the molten pool from atmospheric oxidation. This prevents porosity and increases weld strength.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

A shielding gas system ensures that the molten pool is blanketed in an enclosed space with a gas medium like argon or helium. This gas forms a layer between the metal and the air, keeping oxygen out and preventing oxidation.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Without a shielding gas system, porosity forms in the metal due to atmospheric oxidation. These can lead to cracks and distortion, affecting the strength of the weld. Insufficient gas volume or poor gas distribution can also cause problems.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Make sure the shielding gas system is properly set up and activated. Set the gas pressure and flow rate according to the manufacturer's instructions. Continuously monitor gas quality and ensure even distribution of the gas over the molten pool.
