Shielding Gas Supply

The controlled supply of inert or active gases to displace ambient air and protect the weld pool from oxidative reactions.

The shielding gas keeps the air away from the weld pool. If oxygen gets to it, the metal burns and you get pores and a bad weld. You have to make sure the gas flow is right and the nozzle is positioned properly so the pool is fully covered. Only when the gas is flowing do you strike the arc, and after it goes out, let it flow for a bit longer so the hot spot doesn't oxidize.
