Protective Layer Formation

Protective layer formation is the process where a thin layer forms on a material's surface and prevents corrosion. It reduces the diffusion of corrosive agents into the material.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The protective layer forms through a reaction between the material and the environment, such as oxidation or deposition. This reaction creates a thin film on the material's surface that blocks corrosive agents.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A strong protective layer can significantly extend the service life of components in aggressive environments. However, a missing or too thin protective layer can lead to corrosion and thus to cracks and loss of strength.

Workshop Practice & Procedures

To ensure effective protective layer formation, it's important to use the correct welding technique and parameters. This includes selecting the right welding process, controlling temperature, and applying protective measures like shielding gases or coatings.
