Protection Level for Welding Filters

The shade number for welding filters indicates how strongly a filter protects against ultraviolet and infrared light during welding. The higher the shade, the more protection the filter provides.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The shade number defines the transmittance level of a filter for ultraviolet and infrared light. This radiation can be harmful and lead to eye damage.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Wrong filters may not protect adequately, leading to burns or long-term eye damage. It's crucial to use the right filter for your welding process and arc current.

Workshop Practice & Procedures

Pick a filter with the correct shade number based on your welding equipment. For example: For a CO2 welder, use shade 10; for a MIG welder, use shade 8 or 9. Always make sure the filter isn't damaged and maintain it regularly.
