High Cycle Fatigue Regime
The low-load range is the region in fatigue testing where elastic deformation dominates and fatigue life is very high at low stress amplitudes. The stress remains below the yield point.
Physico-chemical Mechanism of Action
In the low-load range, materials are stressed without plastic deformation. The stresses are so low that no macroscopic deformation occurs. The material springs back elastically after each load.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
In the weld, a transition to the low-load range can occur if the stresses are too low. This can lead to increased service life under low load, but also to a lack of build-up of strength and fatigue strength. Too weak a build-up can lead to subsequent cracking or failure.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To ensure the weld is sufficiently strong, the stresses during welding should be kept as high as possible. This can be achieved by optimal setting of welding parameters and the use of suitable materials. The service life of the weld should be checked regularly to ensure it withstands the expected load cycles.
