Splash Zone Corrosion
Splash corrosion occurs in transition zones where liquid and air alternate. Oxygen and salts greatly increase the corrosion rate.
Physico-chemical Mechanism of Action
Tidal corrosion occurs through contact of the metal with a salty liquid, followed by air. The oxygen in the air reacts with the salt on the metal, forming an electrolyte that accelerates the corrosion reaction.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Tidal corrosion can cause severe cracking and deformation in the metal. It increases susceptibility to hot cracking and reduces the service life of components. If not handled properly during welding, the corrosion risk can be aggravated.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
Avoid direct contact between metal and salty liquids before welding. Ensure all parts are dry and any existing corrosion signs are removed. Use suitable protective agents and carry out welding in a dry environment.
