Sulfur as Impurity Element
Sulfur forms sulfides with iron, which cause red shortness and cracking during hot forming.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Sulfur reacts with iron ore to form low-melting sulfides. These sulfides can accumulate in the weld zone or during hot forming processes and impair the crystal structure.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Sulfide accumulation leads to reduced toughness of the steel. This can cause red shortness (colored cracks) and general crack formation, especially at high temperatures or mechanical loads.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To minimize sulfur content, use clean melt times and controlled forming processes. For steels with high sulfur content, special welding methods like gas welding should be used to reduce sulfide formation.
