Sulfur impact on toughness

The impairment of plastic ductility and impact toughness through undesirable manganese sulfide inclusion lines. These act as internal notches and promote crack initiation under tensile loading.

Sulfur is undesirable in steel. It makes the material susceptible to hot cracking because it enriches in the grain structure and kills strength at high temperature. When welding, you must therefore pay attention to the sulfur content of the base material. If you weld it, sulfides form in the pool, making the weld porous and brittle. So keep the sulfur content low, then the weld remains clean and crack-free.
