Sulfur segregation band
Sulfur segregation stringers are microscopic accumulations of manganese sulfides along the rolling direction in bars or sheets. They can greatly reduce toughness transverse to the main deformation direction.
Physico-chemical mechanism
The sulfur segregation streak forms by the enrichment of manganese sulfides along the rolling direction. These compositions can arise from chemical reactions between the steel and the rolling tool.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
The sulfur segregation streak can significantly reduce the toughness of the material transverse to the main deformation direction. This makes it more prone to cracking and hot cracking, especially when welding under high stress.
Workshop practice & actions
To avoid sulfur segregation streaks or minimize their effects, take the following steps:
• Use high-quality rolling tools with low sulfur content.
• Control rolling temperature and speed to avoid improper chemical reactions.
• For sulfur-rich materials, carry out careful surface treatment before welding.
