Sulfur (S)

Sulfur lowers the melting point and causes cracking during solidification. It reduces the strength and toughness of the weld.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Sulfur (S) causes segregation by being enriched at grain boundaries during solidification. This leads to low-melting phases and a weakened grain structure.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A high sulfur content can lead to hot cracks and reduced strength and toughness of the weld. This hurts the quality and safety of the part.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Avoid sulfur in the weld. Make sure the metal is clean and there are no sulfur fumes in the surroundings. Use deoxidizers like silicon if needed.
