Weld Pool Backing
Weld backing is an auxiliary substance worked into the molten weld metal to stabilize it at the root and protect it from drop-through. It prevents porosity and improves mechanical strength.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Weld backing reacts chemically with the molten pool and forms a stabilized layer on the surface. This layer prevents the melt from sagging or causing porosity.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Without weld backing, the molten pool can sag at the root during single-sided welds, leading to porosity and reduced mechanical properties. This increases the risk of cracking and reduces the service life of the weld.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
Use weld backing for single-sided processes like MIG or TIG. The application amount varies depending on material and process, but typically ranges from 0.5 to 1 % of the total weight of the molten pool. Ensure the melt is well mixed to achieve even distribution of the backing.
