Weld Metal

Weld metal is the metal that is melted and re-solidified during welding. It consists of base and filler materials.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

During welding, the metal in the weld zone is melted, allowing the atoms to become more mobile. These free atoms mix with the filler materials and form a new crystal lattice upon cooling.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Wrong selection or concentration of filler materials can lead to undesirable properties, such as high stress buildup and cracking. Uneven cooling can cause different microstructures and hardness levels in the weld.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Choose the appropriate weld metal based on the desired end product. Make sure the filler materials are correctly mixed and the weld zone is cooled evenly. Use suitable shielding to avoid porosity.
