Weld Metal Analysis
Weld metal analysis checks the chemical composition of the weld to ensure no unwanted phases form and the dilution is correct.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Weld metal analysis examines the chemical composition of the solidified weld material. It determines which elements and their concentrations are present in the weld.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Incorrect dilution can lead to undesirable phases in the microstructure, which impair the strength and toughness of the weld metal. This can lead to cracking or wear problems.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
For a correct analysis, perform the following steps:
1. Remove surface contaminants and dirt from the weld using chemical cleaning or mechanical means.
2. Take a sample from the weld metal that is at least 5 mm in size.
3. Send the sample to an accredited laboratory for metal analysis.
4. Analyze the results and compare them with the specific requirements of the component or the welding procedure.
