Weld Metal Hardness Correlation Formula

The weld metal hardness correlation formula is an empirical function for estimating Brinell or Vickers hardness based on the chemical filler content.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

The hardness of a weld deposit depends strongly on alloying elements such as carbon, silicon, and molybdenum. These elements affect the crystal structure and strength of the microstructure.

Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding

Inaccurate hardness estimation can lead to insufficient or excessive hardness. Too little hardness can cause cracking and failure, while too much hardness reduces formability and refines the microstructure.

Workshop practice & instructions

Use the correlation formula with the exact alloy percentages from the chemical analysis. For example, for a steel with 0.5 % carbon and 1.2 % silicon, you can calculate the hardness in Brinell (HB). Make sure the measurement is done correctly and that the weld cools in the critical temperature range.
