Weld Metal Contamination
Weld metal contamination is the intrusion of foreign materials or gases into the weld, causing embrittlement, cracks, and corrosion.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Contaminants such as steel, iron, or carbon can alter metal behavior. Gases like nitrogen or oxygen can create porosity and impair strength.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Contamination can lead to embrittlement, making the microstructure non-uniform. Cracks form due to stress concentration at pores. Corrosion is another issue, as it dissolves the metal from within.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
Use clean weld materials and protect the workpiece from dust and moisture. Keep the weld in a shielded environment to prevent gas access. For heavily contaminated parts, thorough cleaning is required.
