Ceramic-Based Welding Backup
A ceramic backing strip is a rigid refractory support that controls the weld pool when welding from one side.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
The ceramic base absorbs and reflects the laser light, improving temperature control during metal melting. It also protects the material from overheating and distortion.
Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding
Proper application of ceramic-based welding aids prevents porosity and increases weld strength. Incorrect application can lead to uneven distortion or excessive cooling, resulting in cracks or damage in the metal.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use ceramic-based welding aids for single-sided welding processes like MIG or TIG. Ensure the backing is clean and dry. Apply the material in the correct thickness (typically 0.5 to 1 mm) and let it dry for at least 30 minutes before welding. Ensure even temperature distribution during the melting process.
