Edge bluntness preparation
Edge preparation for welding: beveling the root face to stabilize the process and prevent burn-through at the arc start.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Landing the edge reduces the edge radius at the weld root, which prevents melting of the point during arc initiation. This improves process stability and control over the weld.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Without the land, melting of the point can cause erratic arc starts, leading to porosity and cracks in the weld. This can reduce the strength and mechanical integrity of the joint.
Shop practice & instructions
For a successful land, it's important to reduce the edge radius at the weld root. This can be done by machining a flat face. The exact width and depth of the land depend on the material and process, but it should generally be between 0.5 mm and 1 mm.
