Weld asymmetry
Weld asymmetry is uneven fillet weld or V-groove geometry. It points to bad torch angle or heat input, which can cause distortion and cracking.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Weld asymmetry comes from uneven heating of the metals on both sides of the joint. This can be caused by poor torch travel or misalignment of the heat source.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Asymmetry leads to uneven stress distribution and can cause cracks, distortion, and failure in the weld. It reduces the strength and mechanical performance of the component.
Shop practice & instructions
To avoid weld asymmetry, watch torch travel and heat source alignment. Make sure the metals heat evenly. If you see asymmetry, check welding parameters and torch positioning.
