Weld asymmetry deviation

Weld asymmetry deviation is uneven deformation of the fillet weld sides, leading to uneven loading and possible cracks.

Physical-Chemical Working Mechanism

Weld bead asymmetry deviation results from uneven stresses or temperature differences during welding. This causes different formation of the fillet weld flanks and can lead to uneven distortions in the microstructure.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

An asymmetric weld can cause increased stress buildup, raising the risk of cracking. It can also lead to uneven load distribution and thus mechanical failure.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To avoid weld bead asymmetry deviation, make sure the workpiece is heated evenly. Use suitable shielding gases and weld in a stable environment. For complex parts, it helps to create a model and simulate stresses before welding.
