Weld Dilution Ratio

Dilution is the ratio of melted base metal to total weld metal. It affects weld chemistry and mechanical properties.

Physical-Chemical Working Mechanism

Dilution indicates how much of the base material is melted into the weld. This affects the composition of the weld metal and can cause distortion or unevenness.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Too high dilution can lead to excessive melting, porosity, and reduced mechanical properties. Too low dilution can result in incomplete fusion and lack of bonding between workpiece parts.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To achieve optimal dilution, control the welding temperature and time. For steels with high carbon content (e.g., HSS), high dilution is necessary to avoid porosity. For aluminum alloys, dilution should be controlled to prevent distortion.
