Weld Dilution Ratio

Dilution is the ratio of melted base material to the total volume of the weld bead. It affects the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the weld.

Physical-Chemical Working Mechanism

Dilution indicates how much of the base metal is melted into the weld. High dilution means more base metal is melted, and the weld metal composition is closer to the base material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Too low dilution can result in missing base material properties, affecting weld strength and toughness. Too high dilution can cause uneven cooling and porosity.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

For optimum weld, a dilution between 60% and 80% is recommended. This can be achieved by selecting the right welding process, filler gas, and process parameters.
