Weld Seam Pickling Agent

Weld pickling agents are chemical aids used to remove heat tint and oxide layers on stainless steel. They improve weld quality by providing a clean surface.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

Weld seam pickle contains chemical additives, such as sulfuric acid or citric acid, which dissolve oxide layers and heat tint on the surface. These react with metal ions and form a soluble mixture that can be easily washed off.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Without pickle, oxide layers and heat tint can lead to incomplete weld fusion. This can cause cracks, deformation, or poor weld strength. Using pickle ensures that metal ions react directly with each other, creating a stronger bond.

Shop practice & instructions

Always use a suitable weld seam pickle after welding stainless steel. Remove heat tint with a fine abrasive stone and apply the pickle to the surface. Let it work for 10 to 20 seconds, then rinse with water and dry. This ensures a clean weld base and improves overall weld quality.
