Weld Defect Analysis

Weld defect analysis is the systematic investigation of irregularities to determine causes and derive corrective actions in manufacturing.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Welding seam defect analysis involves the investigation of various physical and chemical phenomena that can occur during the welding process. These phenomena include, among others, stress differences, temperature differences, and chemical reactions in the weld pool.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Defect analysis is crucial for identifying defects such as porosity, cracks, or hardness inconsistencies. These defects can lead to a reduction in mechanical properties and deterioration of the weld's service life.

Workshop practice & instructions

To perform a successful defect analysis, the following steps should be taken:

1. Visual inspection: Check the weld for optical anomalies such as pores or cracks.

2. Metallurgical testing: Use methods like cross-sectioning or microscopic examination to analyze the structure and chemical composition.

3. Stress measurement: Measure stresses in the weld to identify causes of cracks or distortion.

4. Temperature history: Analyze the temperature history during the welding process to identify possible cooling factors.

5. Corrective actions and optimization: Based on the analysis results, take measures to improve the welding process, such as adjusting welding parameters or using a different welding process.
