High-Low Misalignment
Weld edge misalignment is the deviation of the edge line when joining two sheets. It leads to additional bending stresses and can cause loss of strength if not exactly maintained.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Weld edge misalignment occurs due to uneven placement of edges during joining. This leads to uneven stresses and bending in the weld, which deforms the metal and impairs its mechanical properties.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
High edge misalignment can lead to cracking and distortion. The strength of the weld is reduced because the material is not evenly loaded. This increases the risk of hot cracking and fracture under load.
Shop Practice & Action Guidelines
To minimize edge misalignment, the edges of the plate must be accurately aligned. The tolerance for edge misalignment should not exceed 0.5 mm. When joining, carefully use fixtures such as clamps or press machines to ensure straight and symmetric alignment.
