Weld Post-Treatment Sequence
The weld post-treatment sequence is a defined series of mechanical and chemical steps to eliminate surface defects, scale, and residual stresses. It improves the durability of the welded structure.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The post-treatment sequence involves mechanical steps like polishing and chemical processes like washing or pickling. These steps remove surface defects, reduce scale, and relieve residual stresses from the weld.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Without careful post-treatment, surface defects can lead to corrosion, scale can cause cracks, and residual stresses can affect the strength of the weld. Faulty post-treatment can therefore significantly reduce the lifespan and reliability of the welded structure.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
After welding, the following steps should be carried out:
1. Polishing: Smooth the surface with a fine polishing compound to remove cracks and irregularities.
2. Washing: Clean the weld with a mild detergent to remove scale and contaminants.
3. Pickling (optional): For special applications, pickling can be done to condition the surface and improve corrosion protection.
4. Drying: Let the weld dry thoroughly to remove contaminants and stabilize the structure.
