Visual Weld Inspection
Weld seam visual inspection optically checks the outer surface of weld joints for defects and dimensional accuracy. It is the first quality control.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The visual inspection of the weld seam involves visually checking the weld for correct execution and absence of defects. No specific physical or chemical processes are considered, only the optical appearance.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Visual inspection is crucial for detecting obvious flaws like incomplete welds, cracks, or insufficient joint strength. Without careful visual control, serious defects can be overlooked, leading to later failures.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
For visual weld inspection, a high-resolution microscope or magnifying glass with at least 10x magnification is used. The inspector checks the weld for:
• Completeness of the weld
• Absence of cracks and hot cracks
• Correct dimensional accuracy
• Presence of pores or zinc coating
Inspection should be done immediately after welding, before the joint cools down. It is important that the inspector has sufficient knowledge of expected results to identify faulty connections.
