Weld Root

Weld seam root is the bottom part of the weld seam closest to the base material. With single-sided welding, root defects can occur here.

Physico-chemical mechanism of action

The weld root is the area in the weld where the metal has melted the least. Here the chemical composition and structure of the original metal are largely retained.

Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding

In single-sided welding, the root may not be sufficiently penetrated, leading to uneven stresses and defects. This can cause cracks, distortion, or poor weld strength.

Workshop practice & instructions

To avoid root defects, sufficient melting time and temperature are essential. For single-sided welding, the joint design should be chosen so that the root is easily accessible for melting. Controlled cooling is also important to minimize stresses.
