Root Inspection of Welds
Weld seam root inspection checks the underside of the weld seam for full penetration and lack of root notches. This is critical for the strength and reliability of the parts.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Root inspection checks whether the metal has been fully melted and fused. Incomplete penetration can cause root notches, which can serve as crack initiation sites.
Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding
Root notches can lead to component failure and cracking, as they create a gap between the weld metal and the base material. These cracks may grow over time and jeopardize the entire component.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use a high-resolution microscope or a dedicated root inspection machine for close inspection. The weld should be fused to a depth of at least 1.5 to 2 mm. If incomplete penetration or root notches are suspected, re-welding is required.
