Weld Asymmetry
Weld seam asymmetry is an unevenness in the cross-section of fillet welds, leading to unequal leg lengths and unpredictable stress distributions. This can cause cracks and distortion in the part.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Weld seam asymmetry results from unequal thermal conductivity or different stress distributions on the two sides of the weld. This leads to different grain sizes and microstructures, which affects the mechanical properties of the weld.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
An asymmetric weld seam can lead to uneven stresses, which can cause cracks or deformations in the component. It can also reduce the strength and toughness of the weld.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To minimize weld seam asymmetry, the following measures should be taken:
• Heat the component evenly before welding
• Use suitable protective coatings or insulation materials
• Control tension and speed during welding
• Regularly check and adjust the welding machine
