Weld seam alignment
Weld seam alignment is the position of the weld axis relative to the main stresses of the part. Optimal alignment prevents cracks and increases load capacity.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Weld seam orientation affects how stresses are transferred from the component to the weld. Non-uniform load distribution can lead to local hardening and cracking.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Misaligned welds can cause stress concentrations, which can lead to hot cracking or fracture in the component. Optimal orientation ensures uniform load distribution and increases the load-bearing capacity of the weld.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Make sure the weld axis is perpendicular to the main stress direction. For components under stress, use a parallel orientation to the load. For components with uneven stresses, aim for a symmetric position of the welds.
