Weld Defect

Weld imperfections are irregular structures or shapes in a welded joint that impair load-bearing capacity and exceed specified quality limits. They require systematic measures for defect prevention.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Weld defects arise from uneven melting processes, mechanical disturbances during welding, or lack of control over process parameters. These lead to irregular structures in the grain and can cause oxygen blocks or porosity.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Weld defects reduce the load-bearing capacity of the joint, increase the risk of cracking, and can lead to failure under load. They also affect mechanical properties like strength and hardness. In critical applications, this can lead to dangerous failures.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To avoid weld defects, process parameters must be precisely controlled. This includes correct machine settings, proper selection of filler material, and careful pre-treatment of the workpiece. Regular quality control checks are essential to catch defects early and take corrective action.
