Weld seam gauge

Weld engineering deals with the analysis and optimization of welds. It includes the evaluation of parameters such as weld reinforcement, leg length, and root drop, as well as the chemical and physical processes in the weld pool.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Welding metallurgy studies the chemical reactions and physical processes that occur during welding. This includes the behavior of metals in the liquid state, the diffusion of elements through the weld pool, and the cooling mechanics after welding.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Correct application of welding metallurgy is critical for the quality and safety of welds. Wrong parameters can lead to porosity, hot cracking, or insufficient strength. A deep understanding of the chemical and physical processes helps determine optimal welding parameters and minimize potential risks.

Shop Practice & Action Guidelines

In the shop, it's important to control parameters like weld reinforcement (max 1.5 mm), leg length (at least 3x the thickness of the steel), and root penetration (min 70%). The chemical composition of the weld pool liquid as well as the cooling mechanics must also be precisely controlled to achieve a high-quality weld.
