Weld Preparation
Weld preparation involves mechanical or thermal treatment of the workpiece edges to ensure full penetration. This prevents porosity and improves weld strength.
Physicochemical Mechanism
Weld preparation aims to modify the surface of the material to be welded so that full penetration and a homogeneous joint are possible. Mechanical preparation such as grinding or polishing removes cracks and uneven spots, while thermal treatments like laser or blasting smooth the surface and promote metal restructuring.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Without proper preparation, incomplete penetration can occur, leading to porosity and lack of strength. This increases the risk of cracking and reduces the weld's service life. At the same time, excessive preparation can result in a surface profile that's too smooth, which can also cause porosity and weak points.
Shop Practice & Action Items
For mechanical preparation:
• Use a grinder or polishing machine to smooth the edges.
• Make sure no cracks or uneven spots remain.
For thermal preparation:
• Use laser or blasting to make the surface smooth and homogeneous.
• Follow the specific instructions of the equipment being used.
