Welding pass
A continuous strand of molten filler metal within a weld that joins the metal parts.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The weld bead forms by introducing an additional metal into the zone to be welded. This filler material is melted and fills the gaps between metal particles, creating a dense joint.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
A fine or uneven weld bead can lead to porosity and impair the strength of the weld. Too much filler can cause excess build-up and distortion in the metal, which in turn reduces mechanical properties.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
Make sure the filler material is melted at the right temperature. The diameter and length of the weld bead should match the requirements of the welding process. Watch for distortion and porosity during welding.
