Spatter

Weld spatter is metal droplets that form during welding and stick to the surface. They ruin the looks and mess up later coatings.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

Weld spatter forms when liquid is drawn from the weld pool. This liquid condenses into droplets and lands on the unmelted metal surface.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Weld spatter can mar the appearance of parts, which is a problem especially in applications where looks matter. It also interferes with subsequent coatings like paint or finishing. In extreme cases, it can lead to corrosion.

Workshop practice & procedures

Avoid weld spatter by making sure the weld pool is well cooled and no liquid remains. If needed, use a spatter remover or a chemical to get rid of spatter. Make sure the surface is dry and clean before moving on to subsequent coatings.
