Excessive spatter accumulation

Weld spatter buildup is detached melt droplets on the part surface next to the weld. They affect the looks and can lead to corrosion.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Spatter accumulations form when molten droplets don't fully cool and detach during welding. These droplets stay on the surface and settle, creating solid deposits.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

These deposits can hurt the look and cause corrosion. They can also act as stress risers that lead to further damage. Plus, they can crack under mechanical load or weaken the parts.

Shop Practice & Work Instructions

To avoid spatter buildup, prep the weld properly. That means cleaning the parts and using the right anti-spatter. Control the gas flow during welding to reduce spatter. After welding, remove any buildup with a fine brush or a chemical cleaner.
