Anti-spatter compound
Anti-spatter compound is a liquid or paste applied to the workpiece surface around the weld to keep spatter from burning in. It makes cleaning up a lot easier.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Anti-spatter agent forms a thin, watertight layer on the workpiece surface. This layer keeps hot weld spatter from contacting the metal and promoting spatter formation. The chemical composition of the agent can be various liquids, like paraffin oil or special plastics, that don't turn into spatter at heat.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Without anti-spatter, spatter from hot weld can hit the workpiece and damage it. This can cause corrosion, distortion, or even loss of material. Also, the number of spatter increases the load of mechanical cleaning, costing time and money.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Before starting to weld, apply a thin layer of anti-spatter to the areas to be welded. The amount should be enough to form a visible layer, but not so much that it's superfluous and has to be removed later. When applying, use a closed container to avoid contamination or spills. After welding, wipe off the agent carefully before mechanical cleaning.
