TIG filler rod
A welding rod is a stick-shaped filler material without coating, fed into the arc during TIG welding. It prevents porosity and boosts weld strength.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
A welding rod contains metals like silicon or titanium that react in the molten weld pool. They bind oxygen and protect the weld pool from oxidation. This prevents porosity and improves weld quality.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Missing or too low a use of the welding rod can lead to porosity, which impairs the strength and mechanical properties of the weld. Excessive use can stabilize the weld pool, but too much material can cause uneven fusion or excessive hardness in the weld.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use a welding rod with the desired content (e.g., 1-2 % silicon) and feed it manually into the arc. Make sure the addition is proportional to the melting time. A rate of 10-15 g per kg of material to be welded is often suitable. Monitor the fusion and adjust the welding parameters if necessary.
